Wineries in the Porongurups

Porongurup is a sub region of the Great Southern in Australian wine geographical indicator terminology. Riesling is the star variety, but Pinot Noir from this area is the best in WA. Excellent examples of Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay can also be found.

James Halliday, wine writer extraordinaire selected Castle Rock Estate & Duke’s Vineyard as his best wineries of the region for 2019. Duke’s Vineyard Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling 2017 was named wine of the year in 2019 by Mr Halliday. For long term followers of Halliday this should not come as a surprise as he has regularly rated Porongurup wines highly.

Castle Rock Estate & Duke’s Vineyard are open every day with other cellar doors open on weekends. Wine made from Porongurup grapes can be found at the cellar door of West Cape Howe Wines or in the Larry Cherubino range.

The Porongurup Festival is always an opportunity to discover the wine delights of this region with the smaller producers who do not have a cellar door offering their wines to taste and buy at this great event. Keep your eye on the Porongurup Association’s Festival page for the next event.
